  2.     To test this theory, 
  3. investigators have used 
  4. variations of the Ponzo illusion 
  5. that eliminate a sense of 
  6. perspective. In one test, they 
  7. separated the two test lines, 
  8. each within its own inducing 
  9. background, since continuity 
  10. of the inducing lines is not 
  11. essential to the explanation. 
  12. All that remains are the 
  13. appropriate distances between 
  14. the ends of the test lines and 
  15. the contours of the inducing 
  16. pattern. By and large, these
  17. experimental variations do 
  18. yield an illusion that is 
  19. analogous to the Ponzo 
  20. illusion. But the effect is 
  21. generally smaller. One possible 
  22. conclusion is that contrast and 
  23. assimilation are indeed 
  24. determining factors in the 
  25. Ponzo illusion but not the only 
  26. ones. Thus, it is possible that 
  27. this illusion is the joint result 
  28. of both contrast and 
  29. assimilation and depth 
  30. processing, a possibility to 
  31. which I return at the end of the 
  32. chapter.
